Gath Pool in Newtonville has a fresh new look, thanks to a vibrant, new mural titled Waterways. The four-piece mural, gifted to the City of Newton by Spark Newton (formerly Newton Community Pride), was installed on September 15 on the newly renovated bathhouse in the Albermarle recreation area.
The Artist and Her Inspiration
Talented multimedia artist, Amanda Hill created this exciting new piece of public art. The mural’s inspiration comes from the local wildlife and waterways in and around Newton. In her artist’s statement, Hill describes how the piece uses “color and slight abstraction to emphasize the feeling of movement, waves, and weightlessness.” The bright, energetic blues, greens, and aquas are intentionally chosen to complement the surrounding brick of the bathhouse. The artist beautifully connects the diversity and life found in Newton’s waterways to the city’s own unique and vibrant character.
The Process
Amanda Hill’s work was selected from a group of four impressive finalists by a committee of community members. Known for creating public art that brings joy and builds community, Hill was a natural choice for this project.
The selection committee, chaired by Spark Newton Board member Dinny Starr, was impressed with the quality of all the final designs but ultimately felt Hill’s vision was the perfect fit. As Starr stated, “Amanda Hill’s murals will be a perfect bold, dynamic, and beautiful addition to the Gath Pool building and surrounding area.”
The City of Newton, in partnership with Spark Newton, will hold a dedication ceremony for the mural on September 30 at 3 p.m. to celebrate this wonderful new addition to the community.
